A wooden Canoe prow from the Sepik River. A nicely detailed, attractive small canoe prow with inscribed date of its making – 1997. The prow has been cut off from the original canoe when the canoe became beyond repair.

A wooden Canoe prow from the Sepik River. A nicely detailed, attractive small canoe prow with inscribed date of its making - 1997. The prow has been cut off from the original canoe when the canoe became beyond repair.
Detailed on this prow is a crocodile head with an ancestral face set on the top of the crocodile head together with a bird on the nose facing forwards, a sign meaning Good Luck -.
Also detailed are the Iatmul people/ Crocodile Clan Tribes, Middle Sepik River symbols. This piece has a weathered patina from many years of being on the water and two cowry shells set into the face for the eyes.
