An old cassowary bone dagger is made from the thigh bone from the huge cassowary, a flightless bird from the inner rainforest areas. This example is lightly detailed in traditional markings and in good condition.
The cassowary daggers are generally worn in a woven band in the upper arm of men and occasionally on a bush twine cord around the neck. The dagger is used as a tool for many purposes; hunting, digging, ceremonial sacrifices and for body decoration during tribal sing-sing rituals.
This piece has a bright patina caused from many years of use by its owner(s) over many years.
