A stunning, high quality, very deep cut, carved storyboard in hard wood. This board is illustrating a typical busy day in village life, with their mythical legend of the half crocodile and half human man in the centre of the scene.

It gives a fascinating insight into traditional village life as well as delightful scene. These storyboards were originally painted in river clays on the sago spathe panels (the inner bark of the sago tree) to record ancestor stories and legend and they were placed to the ceiling of The Men’s House (Haus Tambarans).

Over later years, the early Missionaries wanted to take the boards back to their home countries, however the sago spathe was too fragile in transit so the villagers carved the scenes onto soft wood and then moved onto hardwood, for finely carved pieces.
