An exceptional, stunning old splashboard, Massim Kula Splash Board Prau from Milne Bay Province. These boards are mounted at both the bow and stern of the canoes to keep the sea water from splashing inside the canoe.
The intricate carvings on the board are all denoted by names, for example, the two circles on either side denote the moons, each with a star in it, which represents vision and light and is the canoes eyes. On the downward shaft of the prow there is the pattern of a snake on both sides the snake is linked with this creation mythology.
This is a beautiful collector's item , very well worn with residue of paint from over many years .

This old board was collected on Gawa Island in the Marshall Bennet Islands, Milne Bay Province, PNG.
