Murik Lakes Mask

A rare, interesting Spirit mask from the Murik Lakes region of the Lower Sepik. High relief details to the nose together and with nasal protrusions and a raised carved bird in flight on the forehead makes this an unusual and very attractive mask.

Symbolic engraved river patterns on the forehead and with small holes on each ear which are decorated with bush fibre and small nassa shells. The mask has a deep brown, old patina. Two holes at the top of the head for hanging the mask in storage have broken but do not detract from the mask's appearance or value.
