This beautifully carved headrest is from the Middle Sepik region and  was used in the days when pillows had not reached the village communities.

Made from local timber with bamboo strips skilfully bent and tied tightly to form the short legs. The central span of this head rest is skilfully carved with the traditional water ripple sign along both sides, which is distinctive and symbolic of the Middle Sepik region only. At one end of the headrest has a carved figure lying on his back, as would be the position when using the headrest, whilst at the other end is a delightful carved animal with tail extended, in walking position. This could be representing a Bandicoot or a Cuscus (possum), both of which are found in abundance in the region.
