A rare and very fine specimen of a Vokeo Island men’s initiation mask. The whole face is finely trimmed with a thick band of sago leaf fibre, bound by palm spathe and held closely in place by plaited rattan bands around the edges.

A rare and very fine specimen of a Vokeo Island men's initiation mask. The whole face is finely trimmed with a thick band of sago leaf fibre, bound by palm spathe and held closely in place by plaited rattan bands around the edges.
It has decorated ears with turtle shell earrings from which hangs small shells. The mask has a wonderful aged and encrusted deep patina.
At the back of the mask is a firmly fixed wooden grip rod where the wearer of the mask grips the mask with his teeth during the rituals.
